If your 20-drum order falls below their batch threshold, they'll run it only when they have enough other small orders to fill a full production run — which can mean 3–6 weeks of waiting.
What to do: Before you even request a quote, ask: "Is 20 pieces a standard production quantity for your line, or is it a make-to-order quantity with longer lead time?" Get a lead time commitment in writing.
My mistake: I assumed "MOQ: 20" meant they'd ship in two weeks. Reality: 6 weeks because they waited to batch my order with others.
Step 2: Nail Down the Material Specifications — Don't Assume Anything
Most buyers focus on the container type (steel, plastic, fiber) and overlook the specific grade. For example:
- Steel drums come in different gauges (18, 20, 22). A 22-gauge drum is thinner and cheaper — but can't hold the same weight as an 18-gauge.
- Plastic drums use different resins (HDPE vs. PP). They have different chemical resistance profiles.
- Fiber drums have varying wall thickness and moisture resistance.
The question everyone asks is "how much does it hold?" The better question is "what is the exact material spec — and how does it compare to the spec I actually need?"
Checklist item: Request a written specification sheet with all material grades, thicknesses, and certifications (UN rating for hazmat, FDA for food contact, etc.). Cross-reference it with your product's requirements.
Step 3: Clarify Environmental Claims — Avoid the Greenwashing Trap
Many suppliers promote "recyclable" or "eco-friendly" packaging. These claims matter for B2B marketing and compliance. But per FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), a product can only be claimed as "recyclable" if it's actually recyclable in locations where at least 60% of consumers have access. Nothing hurts like receiving 50 pristine drums — except that they were shipped loose on a flatbed and two arrived dented because the strapping wasn't secured. For small orders, the shipping cost per unit is already high, and damage can wipe out your margin.
Per USPS guidelines for large envelopes, packaging thickness must not exceed 0.75 inches. For palletized freight, the standards are different — but the same principle applies: you need explicit packaging specs. Ask for:
- Pallet configuration (how many drums per layer, how many layers)
- Stretch wrap type and number of wraps
- Edge protectors and strapping details
- How will they handle less-than-pallet quantities? (banding to a pallet? loose loading?)
Pro tip (from my own $450 damage claim): Require the vendor to send you a photograph of the loaded pallet before it leaves the warehouse. This gives you leverage if damage occurs in transit.
Step 6: Negotiate a Price Structure That Rewards Repeat Business — Even Small Batches
This is the step most small buyers don't think to do. You may only need 10 drums this quarter, but if you can commit to a rolling order (e.g., 10 drums per quarter for the next year), many suppliers will give you a better per-unit price — sometimes as much as 15–20% off the single-order rate.
