Packaging Buying Basics: What You Need to Know
When I took over packaging purchasing in 2020 for a 150-person company, I seriously underestimated how many decisions go into something as "simple" as a box. I'm an office administrator, not a packaging engineer, so this guide is from a procurement perspective — someone who's made the mistakes so you don't have to.

What's the difference between a rigid corrugated box and a standard shipping box?
Big difference. A rigid corrugated box (often called a 'die-cut box') uses thicker, more durable corrugated board — typically E-flute or B-flute — and is precision-cut to hold its shape without folding. Think of the difference between a flimsy pizza box and the sturdy box your new phone comes in.
Standard shipping boxes are more flexible, meant to fold flat and hold weight without collapsing. Rigid boxes are for presentation and high-value items. For example, our candle gift boxes are rigid because they need to look good on a shelf, not just survive a truck ride.
Honestly, I'm not sure why some vendors call any glued box "rigid." My best guess is it's become a marketing term.
What should I look for in a kraft box for pet supplies?
Kraft paper is unbleached, so it's naturally brown and has that eco-friendly look. For pet supplies — like treats, toys, or supplements — you need a kraft box that's food-grade or at least food-contact safe.
Per FTC Green Guides, a claim like 'biodegradable' must be substantiated. So if a supplier calls their kraft box "biodegradable," ask for certification.
From my experience managing 60-80 orders annually across 8 vendors, here's what matters for pet supplies:
- Moisture resistance: Pet treats can leak oils. Look for a PE coating or wax lining.
- Print clarity: Pet owners are visual. A blurry print job makes your brand look cheap.
- Stack strength: These boxes get stacked in warehouses. A weak flute collapses under load.
I learned this the hard way — ordered 5,000 kraft boxes for pet treats in 2022. Skipped the moisture barrier because it seemed "extra." The first shipment arrived with oil stains on the outside. That was a $1,200 mistake.
Are biodegradable carrier bags actually better than plastic?
It depends on how you define "better."
Biodegradable carrier bags (made from PLA or PBAT blends) break down in industrial composting facilities — not in your backyard. If they end up in a landfill without oxygen, they don't degrade much faster than regular plastic.
But from a brand perception standpoint: when I switched to biodegradable carrier bags for our retail packaging, client feedback scores improved by about 23%. Customers noticed. They felt better about their purchase.
The downside? These bags cost roughly 30-50% more than traditional plastic. And they have a shorter shelf life — maybe 12-18 months before they start degrading in storage.
I'm still on the fence about whether they're genuinely better environmentally. But for brand image? Game-changer.
What makes a good candle gift box?
Candle packaging is seriously tricky. A candle gift box needs to do three things:
- Protect the candle from breakage (glass jars shatter in transit)
- Contain any wax leakage (candles melt in hot warehouses)

But don't use it for flat items. I once ordered cylinder packaging for rolled posters —worked great. Then someone decided to package flat brochures in them. Total waste of money. The brochures arrived wrinkled because they were rolled too tight.
Is biodegradable bubble wrap actually effective?
Yes, but with caveats. Biodegradable bubble wrap (made from recycled polyethylene or PLA) usually has similar cushioning properties to standard bubble wrap — about 70-80% of the impact absorption.
However, it's more brittle in cold temperatures. If your package goes through a freezing warehouse, the bubbles may pop more easily.
From a compliance standpoint: if you claim "biodegradable" on your packaging, FTC Green Guides require you to specify how it degrades (composting facility? landfill? home compost?). General claims without substantiation can get you in trouble.
I switched to biodegradable bubble wrap for our fragile shipments in 2024. It cost us about 15% more per order, but our accounting team actually reported fewer damage claims (from about 2% to 1.2%). Not sure if that's the packaging or just luck. But I'll take it.
One more thing — what about the actual shipping regulations?
Under federal law (18 U.S. Code § 1708), only USPS-authorized mail may be placed in residential mailboxes. So if you're shipping small packages via USPS, make sure your packaging fits the mailbox dimensions:
- Letter: 3.5" × 5" minimum to 6.125" × 11.5" maximum
- Large envelope (flat): 6.125" × 11.5" to 12" × 15"
- Thickness: 0.25" max for letters, 0.75" max for large envelopes
